Natural Gas Vehicles in North America
February 27, 2011
Diane Francis in the National Post, February 26th, 2011
"North America’s three partners into a room for days until they forge a viable, sensible, prosperity-producing continental energy scheme. This would involve resumption of Gulf of Mexico drilling, more conservation measures, a rebuild of Mexico’s flagging national oil company to boost production, the fast-tracking of pipelines and projects from the oil sands and the conversion of all trucks, buses, taxis and other large vehicles to natural gas from diesel..."

Tasmania Takes Steps Toward Compressed Natural Gas for Fuel
November 17, 2010

Tas Gas, a regional energy supplier, believes there are strong opportunities for CNG in Tasmania; it has held positive discussions with a number of interested parties and is confident CNG will add an important new dimension to business in the State. The company has backed up their confidence with the launch of two natural gas passenger vehicles and a forklift at an event attended by Tasmania’s Minister for Sustainable Transport and Alternative Energy, Nick McKim.
“I am pleased to see Tas Gas leading by example in terms of using its own product – in this case compressed natural gas or CNG – to operate two of its own vehicles,” said McKim. “CNG is an Australian-sourced vehicle fuel which benefits this nation’s economy and without the potential for supply disruption due to global effects,” he added.
Toyota Aurion bi-fuel for Tas Gas
The Toyota Aurions and Toyota forklift were converted to bi-fuel operation by Melbourne based Advanced Fuels Technology (AFT), developer of the engine system. The vehicles are filled with CNG at the Tas Gas headquarters in Moonah (Hobart), where a small compressor has been supplied & installed by AFT.
Michael Cummings, Chairman of Tas Gas, explained the compressed natural gas (CNG) project is rolling out in two phases. Firstly, the company is planning to convert the rest of its passenger vehicle fleet to CNG as part of its vehicle replacement program. The next step will be to install a CNG fast fill facility at United Petroleum’s 24/7 Selfs Point site in Hobart which is planned for commissioning in the first quarter of 2011.
“We are expecting that CNG will sell for less than $1 per litre diesel equivalent at the initial United Petroleum Site – this is significantly cheaper than the $1.30 per litre which is paid at the bowser currently,” Cummings said.
Tas Gas has developed an alliance with Advanced Fuels Technology as its NGV Technology partner and together the parties are looking to provide a total CNG solution to commercial fleets in Tasmania. Plans are to focus on developing depot based refuelling for fleets such as concrete, courier, bakery, local council and bus fleets. At the same time, public refuelling stations are planned to be developed in Launceston, Devenport, Burnie and a 2nd site in Hobart.
Tasmania has also embarked on an LNG expansion plan for larger articulated vehicles. The emerging LNG and CNG market offers fleet operators of large and small vehicles an opportunity to reduce emissions, carbon and access an indigenous fuel which is well priced & stable.
